What is Dermaplaning and What Does it Help With?

Table of Contents

It’s Dermaplaning December at Flawless, and we’re sharing all about how dermaplaning can help you reduce fine lines and wrinkles, eliminate acne scars, and brighten dull winter skin. This advanced exfoliation technique is one of the best ways to maintain your skin’s health, boost the impact of treatments like microneedling and Botox, and get the most out of your medical grade skincare plan.

Let’s Start with the Basics – What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation technique that is minimally invasive and uses a specialized dermaplaning tool to remove the uppermost layer of your skin. Doing this enhances the regeneration of your skin, making your skin look brighter, healthier, and younger. The procedure also removes facial hair but is not a permanent hair removal treatment. The treatment is best provided as part of a dermaplaning facial or in combination with other skincare services that will restore your skin and boost skin health.

What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is used to treat some of the most common skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Dull skin
  • Dryness
  • Facial hair growth or “peach fuzz”
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Signs of aging

How to Prep Skin For Dermaplaning

As with most things, you can have too much of a good thing. Keeping this in mind, we recommend that clients do not use any manual or chemical exfoliants in the days leading up to the procedure. Leading up to your procedure, you should use a gentle cleanser daily and keep your skin clean from excess dirt, oil, and makeup. Once you arrive for your appointment, we’ll also clean your skin again to ensure it’s completely ready for the procedure to begin. If you are a smoker, we recommend quitting leading up to this procedure as it may stall the healing process.

How Often Should You Dermaplane?

Because exfoliation is such an important part of anti-aging and maintaining your skin’s health, we recommend that patients dermaplane about once a month for ideal results. This ensures that your skin is able to keep up with a natural cycle of regeneration and that dead skin cells do not prevent new and healthy skin cells from replacing naturally each month. If you do not want to dermaplane each month, you can do so on whatever frequency fits your needs and budget. However, we recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks between appointments to avoid skin irritation.

Can I do Dermaplaning at Home?

While at-home versions of the dermaplane tool have been created to make this procedure more accessible to do at home, we highly recommend visiting a professional esthetician for dermaplaning services. Because this procedure involves using a sharp tool to shave off the top layers of your skin, you may risk damaging your skin if you do it alone. Another reason to work with a professional is that some patients’ skin is not healthy enough for dermaplaning. When you visit our office, we examine your skin to make sure that it’s healthy enough for the procedure and does not present any risks. For example, patients with active acne, cold sore outbreaks, moles or skintags, or eczema may not be good candidates for the procedure. We can evaluate your situation based on your skin type and make an appropriate recommendation for exfoliation.
